The orchestral sample used in "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is a sample of the Andrew Oldham Orchestra cover/arrangement of the Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time".
The famous string introduction to "Bittersweet Symphony" is actually a sample from the Rolling Stones' track "The Last Time" and The Verve had to negotiate a deal with the latter song's writers Keith Richards and Mick Jagger to use it. The music sampled is played by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra.
